Friday last, Dh played hookey and we took the boys to the State Fair of Texas. I haven’t been in years and it was the first time for any of the kids – sad I know as they have it every year and the kids get free tickets and their school district takes the entire week off (not just for the fair and this was actually the last year for that thanks to the Texas legislature – but that is an entirely different topic.)
We saw the biggest freaking pig I have ever seen in my life. My grandfather raised them for sausage so yes, I was acquainted enough with them from time to time as a child. He – AND yes he was a he as this was bigger than I have ever seen – sorry – I digress BIG TIME – he could feed a small village for a year I think. Damn, so big it bears repeating!
They had a petting zoo-ish area mixed with all sorts of animals. They had baby piglets, mini-goats, sheep and horses as well as more exotic animals such as camels, llamas, alpacas, zebus and a few I am sure I am forgetting.
I fed all of those by hand as did the two younger boys – they older ones – eh, they were too cool. Mini-me was not afraid of any of them. He walked right up to each pen and shoved his hand in. They had a long horn (see the sign next to it – says it all I think) Mini-me went right up to it and demanded I feed there dern thing so he could touch the beasts humongo horns. I did and he did and he giggled and made the slobber and fear a tad less… everything.
There was a giraffe but he was wary and stayed pretty much in the middle of his pen.
I didn’t think you could still do this but they had hand sanitizers every five feet – I know this as Mini-me used every single one … TWICE.
We ate fried Coke – yep you heard correctly. It was okay – didn’t really taste like coke to me (and if you knew my mother you’d know I am a second generation coke drinking fiend.) We had cotton candy, rock candy, fudge – see a trend here – and a turkey leg. We sampled several things: biscuits, sausage and soups. Spare puked his guts out in the wee hours of the morn – yeah – should have seen that coming.
Big Tex was not overly impressive to the kids (though in 10-15 years I think they will think back and remember him fondly).
Sadly the boys were most awed by the car show and as I had to pull Spare up to his feet several times as he bowed to his favorite cars, I couldn’t wait to get out of there!
We saw a band – don’t know who they were but they weren’t bad and Spare + 1 danced and got several encore requests much to his delight.
And if you’re not from Texas – truly the only big hair we saw was the dude on stage with a Mohawk – a misconception, I have NEVER had big hair – well maybe once or twice in high school but that was almost twenty years ago.
The boys played a couple of games on the Midway but no rides. Those are the biggest money pits and with our Six Flags season passes – um free rides hello – though the boys weren’t too happy about that – but they will get over it.
It took days for my legs to stop hurting. But it was fun!
(Cannot get my pics to upload - will try again later)
I still cannot get my pics to load up; no clue why...
Last night when I let the dog out, I thought I could smell funnel cakes! Love funnel cakes.
Haven't been to a fair in years...too lazy to do all that walking!
I had big hair. I have pictures.
I've never taken my kids to fair =(
