for old time’s sake

Thanks to the advent of Facebook there’s a weird (to me) phenomenon that I see happening. People are reconnecting with folks they went to school with. High school, junior high, even elementary school. I am split on what of it I think is weird. I personally only have a dozen or so former schoolmates in my friends list. Most of whom I' have know from the age ten or fourteen on AND we kept in contact all those years. Now the hubby, he’s friended folks he hasn’t seen, known or heard from since he was twelve. to me that’s just...bizarre.

I’ve tried to explain to him “why” I think it’s weird. Like I said, for me, those I have on FB, I’ve have pretty much been in contact with for 20-30 years. Sure there are a few gaps, but all I’ve known as an adult (from 4th grade on, I went to school with the same people up through graduation). The hubby’s friends, nope, not since just as puberty hit—he hasn’t seen his fellow Bulldogs in years upon years. I keep trying to plead my case that he doesn’t *know* what type of adult these folks are, doesn’t know their character as an adult. You know what I mean—the guy who was class clown could now be the meanest bully as an adult or the sweet, shy girl is now some angry, bitter housewife who does nothing but spew insults and gossip about her neighbors.

Take it one step further and meet up with these folks you’ve literarily not seen in over 25-30 years and I...I am speechless as to how weird. Now I will admit, while I did go to my 10 years reunion, the 20 years (yes, I am that damn old) I completely skipped. I didn’t care enough to go, knew which of my friends were going (or not) and have kept in contact with the ones I want to see anyway. So I already have a slightly warped opinion on “catching up” with people I knew for 4 years over 20 years ago.

Did/will you reconnect with people from your school days? Do you even want to? Or did you stay friends all this time with a handful of folks? AND...do what do you think of all this *reconnecting* thanks to Facebook? (I still find it creepy!)

Home Depot and bust

The Dh and I made a Home Depot run this weekend to get a new door knob for the front door. The key’s been sticking something fierce and we needed to replace it. For some reason the upcoming Super Bowl raised the Dh’s testosterone level just enough to make him *want* to do home improvements. So we go, and find one—one that I might add we managed to get re-keyed so we didn’t even have to change out all the keys we have (it’s the little things that excite me so).

The bad thing about waiting to get the lock re-keyed, we had to walk around the store for 10-15 minutes. We now have a list of things to go back for and do next weekend (like change out another lock, change out all the faucets and change out the light on the back porch—no good deed goes unpunished, right?!?). Still, we got home and changed out the front lock in no time—something so satisfying to do work around the house.

I didn’t get much of anything else done though, it takes a lot of brain effort to decide to changed out the lock, go to the store and get said lock, come home and do the work and then bask in the completion of a job well done. It wipes you out... And then of course the Super Bowl was on, I had to watch all those commercials (though for the most part I was underwhelmed). And... don’t get me started on the kid’s car that died... we haven’t even tackled that darn problem yet.

How was your weekend? Did you accomplish anything? (Did you like any of the touted commercials?) What are your plans for next weekend? Will you be as busy as us with our new Home Depot to-do list?
